Healing Through Running

Healing Through Running

I did not start running until my sophomore year of high school. This story starts before that though. Growing up I was physically and verbally abused by my older brother. He would tell me how I wasn't good enough and how I was a mistake. Then he would beat me with the metal side of his belt or whatever else he could find. Because of that I had a very low self-esteem and was very depressed. I tried to commit suicide a few times but I didn't want to hurt my parents like that. So around my sophomore year of high school I was very broken and I had a few friends on the XC team so I started to run. Running became a place where I could let all the pain and anger of being abused out. It became my release. I ran until it hurt and I kept running because it never hurt more than I was already hurting. Through running I have gained self worth. I can honestly say that if I hadn't started running I probably wouldn't be alive today. Running and the relationships I have gained from running have truly helped me to heal from my brokenness.
