Summer Running : Why it's Important

I'll be the first to admit it: I'm not a fast runner. My best mile is 6:54, 2mile is 15:48, and 5k is 25:38. But I love running. I go out everyday during the off season and I train my butt off. XC season will roll around, and just like last season I know exactly what will happen. I will start the season running with the lead JV/occasional Varsity pack, and end it running with the middle JV pack. Want to know why? Because those girls haven't trained like I have in the Summer, but as the season progresses they become more in shape, and improve much quicker than I. Then I'll feel upset, and jealous of their naturally athletic bodies. But then, I'll start to feel angry and hurt, because they have let the team down. If everyone worked as hard as I do in the summer, then the lead JV would be running as fast as the Varsity, and the Varsity even faster. To not summer train, is a letdown to your teammates, who even though aren't the best best, are giving it their all, all for the love of the run.
